Dog Raincoat Buying Guide: Fit, Coverage & Harness Access
Choose a dog raincoat by your dog’s measurements, the areas it covers, and how it works with the walking gear underneath. Then check the care instructions and evidence behind any waterproof claim. A size letter or the word “waterproof” alone does not answer those questions.

Measure back, chest, and neck
With your dog standing naturally, record back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, chest girth around the widest part behind the front legs, and neck girth as directed by the product. Keep the units beside every measurement. Our measurement guide includes a diagram and a record you can print.
Compare all the requested measurements with the chart for the exact coat. If one falls outside the listed range, do not choose a size based only on the other two. A harness size is not a coat size, and sizes from different coats need not match.
Decide which coverage matters on your route
Look at back coverage, chest coverage, collar height, and how the coat sits around the front legs. Check whether it can move without pressing against the dog’s legs or bunching over the harness. Photographs help explain the shape, but they are not a substitute for dimensions.
The Reflective Dog Raincoat is listed as a lightweight shell with reflective strips and a leash opening. The Windbreaker Coat is listed with a high collar and full back coverage. Neither listing here establishes how the coat will fit your dog without checking the measurements.
Check harness access before buying
If your dog wears a harness, identify the attachment point and check where the coat’s leash opening sits. An opening that works for one attachment position may not work for another. Ask for a photograph or measurement if the alignment is unclear.
Do not attach a lead to an unverified clothing loop simply because it resembles an attachment point. The coat and the walking restraint have different jobs. Check the instructions for both.
Read waterproof claims carefully
Water resistance depends on more than the fabric name. Construction, seams, openings, exposure, and care can all matter. Our catalog describes the two shells as waterproof, but this guide does not supply an independently tested waterproof rating or guarantee that every opening stays dry.
If protection in sustained rain is your deciding requirement, ask for the specific construction details and test information before ordering. Reflective details also do not guarantee visibility in every condition.
Check care and fit before the walk
Follow the exact product’s care label rather than assuming that every shell can be machine washed or tumble dried. After fitting, check that fastenings are secure, the dog can move comfortably, and the lead does not pull the coat into an awkward position.
Numerical charts for our sized coats are still being confirmed. Contact us before choosing a size; breed and weight alone are not enough to determine it. For the rest of the outing, use our rainy-walk packing checklist.
