A LITTLE MEASURING GOES A LONG WAY

How to measure your dog for the right fit

A size letter is just a starting point. Record your dog’s measurements, then compare them with the chart for the exact harness, coat, boot leggings, or carrier.

Before you begin

Use a soft measuring tape, paper, and a pen. If you use string, mark it and measure it against a ruler afterward. Let your dog stand naturally on a level surface. Record the units with every number, and repeat a measurement if the tape slips or your dog changes position.

Keep the tape close to the body without pulling it tight. Follow the exact product’s measuring instructions and allowance guidance for the final comparison; there is no single extra allowance that applies to every harness, coat, or boot.

  1. Chest girth

Wrap the tape around the widest part of the rib cage, usually just behind the front legs. Keep it level as it goes around the body. Record this circumference rather than measuring only across the chest from side to side.

  2. Neck girth

Measure around the base of the neck or at the position requested by the product instructions. Check where the item will actually sit. A harness opening and a collar can sit differently, so do not automatically reuse a collar measurement for every piece of gear.

  3. Back length

With the dog standing naturally, measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Keep the tape along the back. For coats, compare chest and neck measurements too; a matching back length alone does not establish the fit.

  4. Paws and legs

Measure paw width while the dog bears weight on the paw. Record front and rear paws separately, because they may differ. For connected boot leggings, obtain the exact instructions for leg length, leg spacing, and strap measurements as well. A standalone boot chart cannot establish the fit of connected leggings.

Measuring for a carrier

Record body length from the front of the chest to the base of the tail, standing height to the top of the head or ears as relevant, and current weight. Compare them with usable interior dimensions and the weight limit for the exact bag. Follow the carrier maker’s measurement method if it differs.

Outside dimensions and a description such as “small dog” do not tell you how much room is available inside. Your dog needs room to turn and settle comfortably. Read the carrier measurement guide before choosing S or L.

Compare the complete set of measurements

Size labels differ between products and brands. A dog wearing M in a harness may need another letter in a coat. If one measurement falls outside the chart, do not select a size using only the measurements that match. Ask for product-specific guidance rather than always sizing up or down.

Numerical charts for our seven sized products and the carrier capacity are still being confirmed. The instructions above help you collect the measurements; they do not establish which of our size labels will fit. Contact us before ordering when the exact chart is unavailable.

Check comfort when the item arrives

Follow the fitting instructions and check the item with your dog moving as well as standing. Watch for rubbing, slipping, restricted movement, or an awkward attachment position. Stop and reassess if something looks uncomfortable. A measurement match is a starting point, not a guarantee of fit.

Keep the packaging and read our shipping and returns policy before using an item outside.
